The poster is a rarity on the Polish collectors’ market. In addition to its artistic value, its value is also influenced by the non-standard large format in which it was published: 100 x 150 cm
The Festival du Marais was a festival (theatre, music, street performances, etc.) held in the Marais district of Paris from 1962 to 1993. It took place every year in June and lasted around 3 weeks.
The first Festival du Marais in 1962 was organised by a group of young people from the 4th arrondissement to raise funds to save the Maison de l’Ourscamp (the Bear House) on 44 rue François Miron in the 4th arrondissement. The artists contacted agreed to waive their fees (expenses deducted), led by Jean Marais, who helped convince the other participants in this first festival. The festival was held in the courtyard of the Hôtel de Sully on loan from André Malraux, Minister of Culture.
Created on the initiative of a group of young people led by Michel Raude, and a few months before the Association pour la Sauvegarde et la Mise en Valeur du Paris Historique, of which it is the twin brother, the festival’s aim was to make Parisians and the authorities aware of the dilapidated state of the Marais, which has now become one of the capital’s most popular tourist spots. It was to save this district, which was threatened with destruction in the early 1960s, that this team of volunteers decided to organise a festival in the courtyards of the district’s grand mansions and churches.
The Festival du Marais has also served to highlight the sometimes little-known players involved in protecting Paris’s architectural and historical heritage.
