“Dead Souls” is a 1960 Soviet comedy-drama based on the Moscow Art Theatre’s staging of “Dead Souls.” “Dead Souls,” in turn, is an unfinished novel by Nikolai Gogol, written from 1835 until the end of the writer’s life in 1852. The novel is widely considered the pinnacle achievement in his writing. The author first published it in 1842, but later revised it many times.
